This document outlines a known issue with Sendmail V8.9.3 following an update install from V4.0 to V5.0 on Tru64 UNIX systems. Because the newer version of Sendmail enforces stricter permission requirements for its support files, the existing permissions carried over from the V4.0 installation prevent the Sendmail daemon from starting.
To resolve this, administrators must:
1. Log in as root.
2. Change the permissions of the /var directory to 755 using the command: chmod 755 /var.
3. Restart the Sendmail daemon by running: /sbin/init.d/sendmail start.
