Invent-8

INVENT-8 provides a series of FORTRAN-callable subroutines for creating, managing, and manipulating chained, core-image files on OS/8 systems. It includes several specialized file drivers: ISAM.RL for indexed sequential access, ROISAM.RL and WOISAM.RL for read/write access to OS/8 file-structured devices, DUMP.RL for system device data operations, and MULTI.RL for multi-reel DECtape handling. The library also features utility routines for date retrieval (GTDATE), alphanumeric comparison (NCOMP), and a data movement utility (MOVE), along with a sort generator (SORT) for organizing data records. The manual details hardware requirements, file structures, calling sequences for all subroutines, error messages, and provides sample programs illustrating their use.
