System Hardware Installation or Modification

This document, Chapter 2 of the ETOS documentation, provides instructions for setting up the ETOS hardware environment. It details the following key procedures:

• System Booting: Procedures for booting the ETOS system from various media (RK05 disk packs, System Industries removable/fixed packs, and DEC Data Systems) using hardware bootstraps, front panels, or non-disk peripherals.
• Disk Management: Instructions for formatting RK05 and System Industries disk packs, as well as procedures for making image copies of packs to create production volumes and backups.
• Configuration: Guidance on using the CONFIG program to tailor the system to specific hardware, including enabling clocks, printers, and setting terminal characteristics (parity, stop bits, and fill characters).
• Board Testing: Details for running the TSC8.SV diagnostic program to test the ETOS (TSC8-75) board, including hardware requirements, switch settings, and error message interpretation.
• System Enabling: Procedures for enabling time sharing (processor modes, M837/M8317 modules), clocks, and printer interfaces (LA8-A), along with jumper and switch settings for various PDP-8/E and PDP-8/A configurations.
