This document describes a U.S. Patent (4,321,632) for a magnetic tape storage system developed by Digital Equipment Corporation. The invention provides a method to accurately position tape transport heads by utilizing a multi-density recording format. Work data is stored at a high spatial bit density, while positioning marks—including inter-record marks, beginning-of-tape (BOT), and end-of-tape (EOT) markers—are recorded at a lower bit density (specifically one-fourth of the data bit density). This differentiation allows for reliable detection of boundaries and physical tape ends during both high-speed 'seek' operations and standard read/write operations using simplified detection circuitry. The system uses frequency-discriminating logic to identify the type of marker detected and control tape speed and direction accordingly.
